How Does Christianity Stand Apart?

John Lennox opens by showing that Judaism, Islam, and Christianity hold three mutually exclusive positions on Jesus — and then reveals why Christianity’s offer is fundamentally unlike every other religion’s.

Part 1 — The 3 Paths: What Judaism, Islam & Christianity each believe about Jesus

✡️

Judaism

What happened to Jesus (Yeshua)?

He died — and did not rise from the dead.

Died · Did not rise
☪️

Islam

What happened to Issa?

He did not die — he was taken up to God before death.

Did not die
✝️

Christianity

What happened to Jesus?

He died and rose from the dead — the Resurrection is the linchpin.

Died · Rose again
💡 Key observation: All three agree on a historical figure. These three positions are mutually exclusive — they cannot all be true simultaneously. The question of which is correct is ultimately a matter of historical evidence.

Part 2 — How Lennox Explains What Religion Looks Like vs. Christianity

🤔 The Standard Religion Model — Initiation, Path, Judgment

🚪
Initiation
Ceremony, ritual, or rite of entry
🛤️
Walk the Path
Follow laws, rules & the six-fold way
🧑‍🏫
Guides & Teachers
Priests, gurus, imams help you along
📈📉
Ups & Downs
A lifetime of trying to stay on track
⚖️
Final Judgment
Scales weigh your deeds at the END of life
🏛️
Verdict
Pass → Heaven / Nirvana  ·  Fail → excluded
🔴 Acceptance EARNED — conditional on lifetime performance, decided at the END
💬 Lennox: "Most people will tell me — that is what we believe." This includes how millions mistakenly think about Christianity too.
Religions that follow this model
☪️Islam1.9B
40% Deeds weighed on the Mizan (scales) on Judgment Day
🕉️Hinduism1.2B
26% Karma and dharma determine rebirth and liberation (moksha)
⚠️Christian-named Cults & Sects~500M
11% JW, LDS, Christian Science & others — salvation tied to obedience & organisational membership
☸️Buddhism500M
11% The Eightfold Path leads to Nirvana through disciplined merit
🌙Folk / Traditional400M
Ancestor appeasement, ritual behaviour, and communal rites
🌊Shinto100M
Ritual purity and offerings maintain harmony with the kami
🌿Sikhism26M
<1% Seva (service) and Nam Simran move the soul toward Waheguru
☸️Taoism~20M
<1% Moral cultivation and harmony with the Tao accumulate toward immortality
✡️Judaism15M
<1% Mitzvot (commandments) accumulate; God weighs merit
* Follower estimates approximate (Pew Research / World Religion Database). Percentages of global population (~8B).
🎓 Lennox's analogy: "Every university works this way — you get a degree on the basis of your merit. And many of you would say yes, that is religion."

⚗️ Grace + Sacrament — The Middle Ground (Catholicism & Similar)

👶
Baptism
Infant baptism initiates grace & removes original sin
🏛️
Sacraments
Eucharist, Confirmation, Confession — required channels of grace
📜
Merit & Works
Good works contribute to sanctification & final standing
🔥
Purgatory
Remaining sin purged after death before final acceptance
⚖️
Final Acceptance
Grace + cooperation with works — secured at or after death
🟡 Grace initiates — but sacraments & works participate. Acceptance is not fully secure until death.
✝️ Catholicism ~1.4B
~1.39–1.42B (Annuario Pontificio 2024) — largest single denomination. Justification is a process; mortal sin breaks it; Confession restores it.
☦️ Eastern & Oriental Orthodox ~290M
~170–220M Eastern + ~70M Oriental Orthodox — salvation as theosis, cooperative process of grace and human synergy.
🏰 High Anglican & Some Lutheran ~155M
~85M High Anglican + ~70M sacramental Lutheran — baptismal regeneration and Eucharist as means of ongoing grace.
Note: These traditions affirm grace but add sacramental & cooperative works as necessary participants in salvation — placing them between the two models above.

✝️ Christianity — Grace-First: Acceptance at the Cross, Not the Judgment Gate

✝️
The Cross
Jesus died & offers forgiveness right now
🔄
Repentance
Turn away from the mess of life
🙏
Trust
Accept Jesus as Saviour & Lord
🎁
Acceptance NOW
Given freely at the START — not earned, not conditional
❤️
Good Works Follow
Response to love — not a bid to earn it
🤝
Relationship
With God — begins now, not after judgment
🟣 Acceptance is a FREE GIFT at the BEGINNING — the path flows from it
💬 Lennox: "Christianity is not a religion. The acceptance is not at the end of the journey at the judgment — it's at the beginning of the journey, at the cross."
How the world breaks down
⚖️ 56%
Works-Based Religions
~4.5 Billion
Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christian-named cults & others — acceptance earned at the end
⚗️ 22%
Grace + Sacrament
~1.8 Billion
Catholic (~1.4B), Orthodox (~290M), High Church — grace initiates but sacraments & works participate in salvation
16%
Non-religious
~1.3 Billion
Atheist, agnostic, secular — no religious framework. Includes LaVeyan / atheistic Satanism (self-worship, no afterlife judgment).
✝️ 9%
Grace-First Christianity
~700 Million
Protestant & Evangelical — salvation by grace alone through faith alone. Lennox's distinction fully applies here.
2%
Other
~140 Million
Bahá’ï, Jainism, Zoroastrianism, new religious movements & more

🚀 Why Christianity Doesn't Compete With Other Religions

🎁

Forgiveness offered freely — no other religion offers forgiveness on these terms, as a gift at the outset.

🤝

Relationship, not just rules — the starting point is a personal relationship, not a moral contract.

💜

Love and acceptance first — God's acceptance precedes and motivates every good deed, rather than rewarding them.

🔓

No other offer like it — because Jesus offers something unique, it is a “no-brainer” to accept what no one else offers.

💍 The Marriage Illustration — Lennox's Clearest Analogy

❌ The Wrong Model (the joke)

"Here is a cookbook. Keep these rules for 40 years. Then I will accept you — otherwise, back to your mother." No one would treat a person this way. Making acceptance conditional on performance is an insult — it turns love into a transaction and God into a monster.

✅ The Real Model (what actually happened)

Acceptance came first — "Will you marry me?" Then she cooked, not to earn love, but because she already had it. Lennox speaks publicly not to earn brownie points with God, but because his acceptance is already secure. Good works flow from love, not toward it.

"
Christianity is not a religion. The acceptance is not at the end of the journey at the judgment — it's at the beginning of the journey, at the cross.
